Taekwondo team to train for SEA Games in Laos

VietNamNet Bridge - Vietnam’s 40-member taekwondo team will start training at Hanoi’s Sports Training Centre No 1 on February 2 in preparation for the 25th SEA Games to be held in Laos late this year.

Last month, Nguyen Dinh Toan and Nguyen Minh Tu bagged a couple of gold medals in the mixed doubles of the World Taekwondo Performance Championships in Turkey.

Marital art has been a strong point for Vietnam in international competitions.

Artist Tran Hieu Ngan won the country’s first Olympic silver in the women’s under-57kg in Olympics Sydney in 2009.

National Jins back in training today

The Philippine Taekwondo Association (PTA) will resume the rigid training of its athletes today with the 25th Southeast Asian Games in Laos in December as their focus.

According to PTA national training director Stephen Fernandez, the association has lined up several competitions for its national team this year, the principal goal of which is a strong performance in Laos.

“We’ll have a busy year, lots of major competitions including the SEA Games,” said Fernandez, a former national athlete and Olympian.

The Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) has urged all members of the national teams to report back to training on January 15.

“They [jins] shortened their vacation but we think they’ll go back to training well-rested and invigorated from the Christmas break,” Fernandez said.

The RP taekwondo team bagged one gold, four silver and six bronze medals in the Nakhon Ratchasima (Thailand) SEA Games two years ago. Tshomlee Go won the solitary gold medal.

Taekwondo officials are also looking at the 2009 Asian Youth Olympics in Singapore in July, which is a qualifier for the 2010 Youth Olympics also in Singapore.

Pak taekwondo team to go to Seoul for training

KARACHI: The Pakistan Taekwondo Federation (PTF) is targetting South Korea as the most suitable spot for the training of its players ahead of the First Asian Martial Arts Games slated to be held in Bangkok from April 25 to May 5.

“We plan to send our players to Seoul for a two-week training in order to prepare them well ahead of the tough competition in Thailand. We intend to leave for South Korea on April 17 and from there the squad will move to Thailand on April 23 to participate in the Games,” the secretary of the PTF Major Wasim Ahmad told ‘The News’ in an interview on Wednesday.

He said he had already negotiated his plan with the World Taekwondo Federation (WTF) President and has been granted permission to train his team in South Korea for the Asian Martial Arts Games. He further said the trip would help boost the morale of the Pakistani players and will dispel the sort of fear from their hearts which they usually harbour about their Korean opponents.

“Asia is ruling over the world in taekwondo and the coming Games in Bangkok could be deemed as a world class show and our players will have to put in their best if they want to give good news to the nation,” Wasim added.

Elaborating on the expenses of the Seoul trip, he said it would cost around Rs. 1500,000 but called the trip is indispensable for preparation for such a big event.

He also said that he had apprised the President of the Pakistan Olympic Association (POA) General Arif Hassan about his plans during his meeting with the top brass of the martial arts federations early December last year in Islamabad, adding this will also come under discussion during the meeting of the national federations planned by the Pakistan Sports Board (PSB) in the middle of this month in the federal capital. However, Wasim showed optimism that General Arif Hassan, who is also the chairman of the Pakistan Sports Trust (PST), will definitely help him implement his plans.

About his selection plans, he replied that leading players of the national and the national ranking championships which have already been conducted by the PTF at the end of last year will be put in the camp for the Bangkok event. He added that four men and the same number of women will represent Pakistan in taekwondo in the Bangkok Games.

It is pertinent to mention here that in the Asian Martial Arts Games, players from 45 countries, would show their worth in eight different disciplines.

Australian, state and zone champs crowned

Two Australian champs were crowned from the one small Taekwondo club in the Nambucca Valley.

The results got better, as final points were calculated over the last few weeks. Two other members were crowned state and zone champions in their age groups.

Former Australian champion Reece Trent passed on his Australia Independent Martial Arts Tournament (IMAT) title for 10-15 year-olds to his younger brother, Trent.

Reece went on to claim the NSW championship for the same age group.

Hope Forrest was named Mid North Coast champion for her age.

Tournament trainer Dean Conlan was named Australian Senior Male Champion for over-18s.

Nambucca Valley Taekwondo Club head instructor Murray Hicks said this year ’s outstanding results had everything to do with the effort that Conlan had put into preparing students for the physical and psychological challenges of tournament competition.

"The club finished sixth out of all the clubs entered in IMAT from across Australia," he said.

"For a small club, that is a wonderful result, and Dean deserves all the credit for that." Conlan focused on a combination of fitness and training regimes to prepare students for tournaments, and prevent newcomers freaking out ’.

"You get used to sparring with the same people, so it is a challenge when you get there and you are put up against people fighting in a different style, who might be a lot bigger than you are," he said.

"You only have a couple of minutes to prove the worth of all your training, so you ’ve got to be ready to think on the spot." The champions ’ awards were decided by adding together all the tournament points accumulated during the year~ which rewarded both winning and participation.

Each competes in an age division against those on the same level as them. Hope is currently a red belt, while the Stack boys are Sho Dan Bos, or provisional black belts.

Dean is a third Dan black belt. All of them have been training for years to achieve their belts, and were looking forward to taking on the next step next year.

The group of champions has stock-piled a huge mound of trophies and medals from their activities throughout the year and are hoping for more success in 2009.

Our Ember’s flying

Ember said. Recently the sports star was invited to attend the Canadian Commonwealth Games, but was unable to attend because of a lack of funds.

Next year, she is hoping to compete at the US Open in Las Vegas.

WHEN it comes to balancing work, studies and a gruelling taekwondo training regime, Park Orchards ’ Eve Ember knows how to tough it out.

The 20-year-old last year won silver at the Taekwondo Australian Open and National Championships in Sydney.

This followed gold at the same event in 2005, and a silver at the Victorian Championships in 2006.

Ember earned many of the medals while completing her VCE and working part time to cover training expenses.
