National Jins back in training today

The Philippine Taekwondo Association (PTA) will resume the rigid training of its athletes today with the 25th Southeast Asian Games in Laos in December as their focus.

According to PTA national training director Stephen Fernandez, the association has lined up several competitions for its national team this year, the principal goal of which is a strong performance in Laos.

“We’ll have a busy year, lots of major competitions including the SEA Games,” said Fernandez, a former national athlete and Olympian.

The Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) has urged all members of the national teams to report back to training on January 15.

“They [jins] shortened their vacation but we think they’ll go back to training well-rested and invigorated from the Christmas break,” Fernandez said.

The RP taekwondo team bagged one gold, four silver and six bronze medals in the Nakhon Ratchasima (Thailand) SEA Games two years ago. Tshomlee Go won the solitary gold medal.

Taekwondo officials are also looking at the 2009 Asian Youth Olympics in Singapore in July, which is a qualifier for the 2010 Youth Olympics also in Singapore.
